We followed up by seeking council permission to remove the tree. The arborist sent by the council assessed it and declared the tree safe, advising there was no cause for concern. We took that advice at face value.
Unfortunately, while we were overseas, our neighbour called us with every homeowner's nightmare — the tree had come down on our house during a storm. SES was unable to assist, and being overseas, we were completely helpless and had no way of knowing the full extent of the damage.
